How To Stop Worrying About Money

When the subject of money comes up, how does it make you feel? Are you open, and ready for the conversation? Do you feel anxious?

The number one cause of stress in the United States is money. 72% of Americans have stressed about money in the last 30 days, that is 236,304,000 people! This survey was done in 2015, which leads me to believe the number is even HIGHER now, during a pandemic.

What does the “American Dream” look like to you? For some who come to America chasing that exact thing, it looks like freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom to wear whatever clothes they want to wear, and speak their minds openly. Some people see the dream in having a nice house, nice car, good career, money, fancy clothes, etc.. For others, what they want for their life is quite the opposite. Something like 25 million people lost their jobs in the United States due to Covid-19.

The key to not stressing about money is to see money as a TOOL that works for you, not something that controls your life. Financial freedom and the “American Dream” look different for everyone. Let’s dive into what that may look like for you.

Start A Budget

Although most people have a “budget system” in their home, one way to benefit from a budget that you might not be doing is changing your mindset.

How does your budget plan make you feel? Does it feel like a pain in the ass to keep up with? If so, your current budget may be causing you money anxiety. Writing out our expenses can feel like a useful way to organize our income vs expenses, but organizing your finances should be looked at like Marie Kondo taught us for organizing the clutter in our homes. If it doesn’t spark joy, it shouldn’t be here.

Now, don’t get me wrong, we all have some bills that definitely don’t “spark joy”. That is just a part of life. But, take a look at your list of expenses.. How many of those things are necessities? People often drain their bank accounts buying things they don’t need, to make them feel some kind of fulfillment or reward after their long 40–60hr work week.

The median annual income for the United States is $31,133. Broken down, that is $2,595 per month, $649 per week, $16.22 per hour when divided for a 40 hour work week. Some people struggle to make even that. Because of this, the worst relationships with money stem from working hard but not getting the reward you expect, or what you feel you deserve.

Instead of being a slave to your budget, use your budget as a tool to see where you can improve. What could you add or take off to make yourself happy and feel more fulfilled? Are you living a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget? Don’t let it stress you out, make the necessary changes to your spending habits to align with what it is you want out of your life.

If you can not see a path to take to get yourself out of the current situation you are in financially, some people turn to getting a second job. A lot of the time, this actually causes MORE stress because now you are “making money” but working ALL THE TIME and don’t have time to spend the money or to do the things you want to do with it. Not to mention the constant battle of having very little vacation time and needing pre-approval to use it.

Have you considered investing some of the money you would normally spend on going out, into furthering your education? College is expensive, but knowledge is priceless. When you get a bonus at work, or your taxes, or stimulus check.. what do you spend it on? Why not invest that money back into yourself and learn ways to make money without selling your time? Now I know, one way or another, everyone has heard someone online talk about passive income. The problem is, they sell you a course that costs $1,000 and that is a large investment for some people. Not to mention the fact that the people buying the courses are already short on time.

What if you could change your life for as little as $1.60 per day? That is less than a bottle of soda. If I told you to invest $2 in yourself, and believe in yourself, and do not give up.. every single day.. and in turn, you get $200 back every single day that you don’t give up.. Would you do it? A lot of people say no. A lot of people think passive income is a scam. But what if it’s not?

There are a lot of people who will claim that you can become a millionaire overnight with no work at all if you just buy their program, right? Well, that’s just a bold-faced lie, of course you have to put in the work. I’m here to help you see this extra income as a tool, not as an overnight fix. Let’s say, your goal is to make an extra $10,000 per year. Broken down, that is $833 per month, and $28 per day. Yes, PER DAY.. not per hour. Now, in your current thought process that may sound ridiculous, but that’s why i’m here trying to help you change your mindset.

What could you do to earn $28 per day? You could mow/shovel/rake 3 yards for $10 each, that would be pretty easy. You could tie-dye shirts, be a designated driver at the local bar, grow and sell plants, sell abstract paintings, the list really goes on forever. So what are you waiting for? That first $28 per day of extra income and a simple mindset change could quickly become $100 per day once you are motivated. The only thing holding you back is you. If you are not happy with your lifestyle, then let’s change it!
